God works in mysterious, and in the case of Evan Almighty, often hilarious ways.
Evan Almighty is the sequel to Jim Carrey’s 2003 hit comedy Bruce Almighty that grossed almost $250 million US in North America alone.
Of course that meant a sequel but Carrey was procrastinating so the writers adapted their idea to create a modern Noah for Steve Carrell.
He played the smarmy news anchor Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty.
When we meet him, Evan is off to Washington as a newly-elected congressman.
He’s eager to please everyone and create an indelible image which makes him prey for John Goodman’s corrupt politician.
Before Evan can become party to a scheme to destroy more natural forests, God (Morgan Freeman) appears with his assignment to build and ark.
Carrell’s dead pan, disbelieving reactions are hilarious.
Soon he can’t shrug things off any longer because his hair and beard grow to Biblical proportions.
Freeman’s laid-back deity is still funny especially because there is such a mischievous glint in his eyes.
He’s not a vengeful god but one who knows how to teach a lesson to Evan and the audience.
Bruce Almighty was an edgy adult comedy.
Evan Almighty is about as family friendly a comedy one could expect in the summer months.
It’s the summer equivalent of a Tim Allen’s Santa Clause movie or a Eddie Murphy Dr. Doolittle.
Preteens are going to love this one as will their adult chaperones.
Unfortunately for Universal Pictures who spent $170 million on this flick, it won’t wow or woo the teen and twentysomethings.
The computer special effects for the flood and those that bring all the animals together are impressive and will delight youngsters.
Evan Almighty has some excellent family and environmental messages and delivers them without too much preaching.
